Galleria Himmelblau, Finlaysoninkuja 9, Finlaysonin alue, Tampere
Galleria avoinna ke-pe 11-18, la-su 12-16. Suljettu ma, ti ja juhlapyhät.

Tuonpuoleisen värejä tuo Galleria Himmelblaun Puuvilla-saliin Ella Varvion tarinallista lasitaidetta. Fotoniikka eli valotiede tutkii lasia valona läpäisevänä aineena, monialaisessa PhotonArt hankkeessa selvitettiin kiinalaisen keramiikan lasitteiden värejä ja luotiin niiden pohjalta lasinpuhallukseen soveltuvia lasivärireseptejä.

Näyttelyä ja PhotonArt -hanketta on tukenut Suomen Kulttuurirahaston Pirkanmaan Rahasto.

Welcome to my exhibition at Galleria Himmelblau 9.12.2023-7.1.2024! The vernissage is held on Saturday 9th of December at 4-7pm

Ella Varvio : Colours of the Afterlife. Galleria Himmelblau, Finlaysoninkuja 9, Finlayson historical district, Tampere, Finland

Gallery open Wed-Fri 11-18, Sat-Sun 12-16. Closed Mon-Tue and on public holidays. Free admission.

Colours of the Afterlife brings Ella Varvio’s glass art to Galleria Himmelblau. The artworks are inspired by colours and subjects of ancient Chinese ceramics. Varvio’s imagery is often narrative and her art pieces are made using traditional craft techniques such as glassblowing and engraving. Moreover the exhibition has a link to new glass research as there is a section about colour research conducted together with Tampere University Photonics Laboratory. Photonics is the science of light and it studies glass as a material that transmits light. In the multidisciplinary PhotonArt project colours of old Chinese glazes were analyzed to create new glass materials.

The exhibition and PhotonArt project is supported by Finnish Cultural Trust Pirkanmaa Regional Funds

Workshop in Riihimäki

My work in process…

In early September I was participating in a workshop organized by the Finnish Glass Museum in Riihimäki. The workshop followed the opening of Back on Tour -exhibition of modern engraved glass in Europe. The exhibition is a real cornucopia of new engraved glass and I highly recommend to visit!

The workshop itself was instructed by glass artist and engraver master Wilhelm Vernim at the premises of Lasismi studio in Riihimäki. The gaffer of the workshop was glassblower Korbinian Stöckle alongside with Lasismi’s glassblowers. Week’s theme was Graal, which is fairly familiar to me, but I’ve still got a lot to learn on these engraving techniques. Many thanks to all for a great week!

My graal piece in the state of hot sculpting. I think I will title this work as Snake Orgy…

Overlay sheet glass, this ruby red matches the autumn colours…

I recently took part in glass engraving workshop by artist-engravers Heikko Schulze-Höing ja Wilhelm Vernim. I have always been a dremel engraver and these more traditional lathes and wheels were a bit of a challenge to learn! The course was organized by the Finnish Glass Museum and glass studio Lasismi in Riihimäki, Finland. The aim was to re-introduce Finnish glass artists and designers to traditional craft of glass engraving … and well yes I finally got some sort of grip of these tools.

…jeez this is difficult, practicing engraved portraits .

Btw. Herkkyyskausi exhibition is still going on in Voipaala Art Center near Valkeakoski until 5.11. On Sunday 29.10 2pm onwards I am going to be at the art center telling about the techniques and stories behind my artworks. Welcome!

Voipaalan Taidekeskus, Sääksmäentie 772, Sääksmäki. Open Tue-Fri 11am-5pm, Sat-Sun 12pm-6pm. Admission without discounts 6 euros.
