Overlay sheet glass, this ruby red matches the autumn colours…

I recently took part in glass engraving workshop by artist-engravers Heikko Schulze-Höing ja Wilhelm Vernim. I have always been a dremel engraver and these more traditional lathes and wheels were a bit of a challenge to learn! The course was organized by the Finnish Glass Museum and glass studio Lasismi in Riihimäki, Finland. The aim was to re-introduce Finnish glass artists and designers to traditional craft of glass engraving … and well yes I finally got some sort of grip of these tools.

…jeez this is difficult, practicing engraved portraits .

Btw. Herkkyyskausi exhibition is still going on in Voipaala Art Center near Valkeakoski until 5.11. On Sunday 29.10 2pm onwards I am going to be at the art center telling about the techniques and stories behind my artworks. Welcome!

Voipaalan Taidekeskus, Sääksmäentie 772, Sääksmäki. Open Tue-Fri 11am-5pm, Sat-Sun 12pm-6pm. Admission without discounts 6 euros.

Work in process

“Let it bloom” sketch for a glass artwork, Ella Varvio 2016

I have been practicing a steady hand lately! I am producing a set of artworks inspired by nature – quite obvious for a Finn, but anyway.  Some of these pieces are pure admiration of the beauty of trees, wild flowers, animals of the forest – some show the imaginative and much darker forest… It is very much work in process – even I myself am looking forward the final outcomes. These artworks will be on show at my solo exhibition at Galleria Mafka&Alakoski, Helsinki.

Here’s some of this years events, all in Finland / 2017 Näyttelyt

  • Solo exhibition, Galleria Mafka&Alakoski, 16.3.-13.4.2017
  • Syysnäyttely, Voipaalan taidekeskus 13.9.-15.11.2017

Peep show in Nuutajärvi 28.5.-14.8.2016!

Oh dear, Nuutajärvi summer exhibition is just around the corner! This year the exhibition is titled Peep show! The artworks are shown in a box – where you need to peak in – and be surprised… The exhibition opens 28.5.2016 at 3pm in old factory building (Vanhan Hytin halli) and it will run until 14.8.2016. So proud to be among the artists at the famous glass village!

Lauantaina 28.5. aukeaa Nuutajärven Lasikylän kesänäyttely! Jänskättää olla mukana ja päräyttäviä töitä tuloillaan. Peep show – Toinen todellisuus näyttely rullaa 14.8.2016 asti, joten kesällä tervetuloa Lasikylälle tutustumaan.

Otherwise I’ve been hanging around much in Riihimäki.  My new artworks have been made at Mafka&Alakoski glass studio, at the premises of old Riihimäki glass factory. If you are visiting the Finnish Glass Museum nearby (the new Accident exhibition is superb) be sure to visit also the glass studios in old factory milieu.

Muuten on tullut hengattua Riihimäellä. On niin hienoa, että uusia teoksia on puhallettu henkiin Mafka&Alakosken hytissä. Hyttikorttelin pajoihin kannattaa ehdottomasti mennä tutustumaan.

Here’s a close-up of one of the new pieces of this spring, more pics coming up!

Waiting for spring flowers…

In past months I’ve been sketching new artworks. Can not wait to test the ideas! There’s at least two summer exhibitions coming up here in Finland: art exhibition in Maila Talvio -salong and legendary Nuutajärvi summer exhibition. And for a while I visited Riihimäki and the Finnish Glass Museum. How sheering to find  familiar items in the permanent collection (piece from Comic Art in Glass and Wasteland there on the lower shelf)!

Yep, it’s not yet time for spring flowers here, but one can play with the thought…
