Working in Nuutajärvi Village

Here are some pics from this summer. I have been working on some new artworks after the spring’s lockdown. As you all I am still a bit worried how the fall will be like- but at the moment I am just so happy to be at work.

Also worth mentioning, many thanks for Arts Promotion Center Finland for supporting artists through the tough times. I lately received their grant for artistic work, meant for designers and artists whose work and income had been effected by the lockdown.

Gravur – Back on tour – presents new European glass engraving art. I am proud to be part of the show with two of my art pieces. The exhibition is held at European Museum of Modern Glass, Rödental, Germany.

Here’s a very nice video from the exhibition (in German, but you can enjoy the visuals anyway) :

Virtual Conference

I have submitted a lecture on Finnish glassmaking to Glass Art Society’s virtual conference happening May 21-23. Originally the conference would have been held in Southern Sweden – however due to the unexpected situation, the conference was cancelled.

As an consolation GAS is organizing Virtual Conference that can be seen at glassart.org website starting from May 21st.  There’s quite an interesting list of presentations : lectures, demos, etc.

Thank you 2019

Thank you 2019, the life of an artist is not the most even : there are moments of doubt and hesitation, but then again equal amount of creativity and joy.

This year included among other things : making new artworks in Nuutajärvi, exploring glass colours in co-operation with Tampere University, support for my artistic work from Finnish Cultural Trust’s Pirkanmaa Regional Funds, sales exhibition at auction house Bukowskis, exhibition together with Elina Salonen in Netherlands … To be honest, there’s quite enough.

Looking forward 2020, let there be more creativity than doubt.

Exhibition open at Art Gallery Rozendaal

Exhibition of new Finnish glass is now open in Netherlends! Me and my colleague Elina Salonen traveled to Low countries a week back, to set up the exhibition and attend in the opening at beautiful Art Gallery Rozendaal. The gallery is located in Montfort, Limburg, in southern corner of Netherlands, near both Belgian and German border. Workshop in Riihimäki

My work in process…

In early September I was participating in a workshop organized by the Finnish Glass Museum in Riihimäki. The workshop followed the opening of Back on Tour -exhibition of modern engraved glass in Europe. The exhibition is a real cornucopia of new engraved glass and I highly recommend to visit!

The workshop itself was instructed by glass artist and engraver master Wilhelm Vernim at the premises of Lasismi studio in Riihimäki. The gaffer of the workshop was glassblower Korbinian Stöckle alongside with Lasismi’s glassblowers. Week’s theme was Graal, which is fairly familiar to me, but I’ve still got a lot to learn on these engraving techniques. Many thanks to all for a great week!

My graal piece in the state of hot sculpting. I think I will title this work as Snake Orgy…

You’re warmly welcome to see fresh fun products, artworks and prints from four design talents : Sarianna Niskala, Lotta Maija, Ella Varvio and Orcum Erdem.

The exhibition showcases interior mirrors, prints and glass art by the young designers.
