Teoksiani ja tuotteitani mukana Rajataiteen myyntinäyttelyssä, tässä muutama niistä:
I recently took part in glass engraving workshop by artist-engravers Heikko Schulze-Höing ja Wilhelm Vernim. I have always been a dremel engraver and these more traditional lathes and wheels were a bit of a challenge to learn! The course was organized by the Finnish Glass Museum and glass studio Lasismi in Riihimäki, Finland. The aim was to re-introduce Finnish glass artists and designers to traditional craft of glass engraving … and well yes I finally got some sort of grip of these tools.

Also worth of visiting is the historic hill fortress of Rapola, just beside Voipaala art center. The hill itself has been formed during ice age, and it was turned into fortress in Viking Age or even earlier… So if you’re into hiking, history and arts, definetaly recommend visiting Voipaala Art Center and Rapola hill fort. Here’s a view from the hill:
This is a busy month indeed, my art and design items are going to be featured in various events in Finland and abroad:

The phenomena are mirrored through larger megatrends and societal changes. Signals is curated by Susanna Björklund and her team, and it is part of Ahead!, the design area of Habitare.

Bor és kézműves -gallery, Budapest, Hungary 22-24.9.Contemporary glass art by Ella Varvio and Laura Aalto-Setälä. The artworks were made at glass art workshop in Bárdudvarnok, Hungary. The exhibition is part of Eleven Ősz a Bartókon -festival with the theme Finland100. The exhibition is at Bartók Béla u. 8 open 10am-6pm.
Scandinavian Glass – Starting All Over, The Glass Factory, Boda, Sweden 30.9.-29.10. The exhibition shows the innovative trends in the handmade Nordic glass right now, for example in interactive smart glass, innovative project-based forms of cooperation, product development and business models.
Few pictures from the glass studio – Nemzetközi Üveg Alkotótelep – in Bárdudvarnok, Hungary. Last week was very intensive, many thanks for the organizers, participants and glassblower-artist James Carcass for helping to realize new Graals. The artworks by me and Laura Aalto-Setälä will exhibited at Bor és kézműves -gallery in Budapest during Finnish festival on 22-24.9.
And this Sunday, 27.8. there is Designtori in Tampere. Some glass art can be found at Galleria Rajatila’s exhibition at the fair in Tullikamari 11am-6pm. Welcome!
Two of my artworks After the bees have gone and Stressed Out are now on display at Kiskép Galéria, Budapest, Hungary. The small gallery is located on Buda Castle Hill, one of the most scenic and historic parts of Budapest. The gallery exhibits a variety of works from Hungarian artists and is worth of visiting. The address is Országház utca 8 and it is open 10am-6pm daily.
Both of artworks were made last year during Finnish-Hungarian glass art symposium in Bárdudvarnok, southern Hungary. They both present a variation of Graal technique and they were made in co-operation with glassblower-artist James Carcass. I’ll be visiting glass studio in Bárdudvarnok again next month and looking forward an inspiring time there.
And an another thing, possible plans for next year: I decided to apply for ARTROOMS 2018 – an alternative art fair in London. They offer selected artists to exhibit in a hotel room for few days to put up an exhibition – and I have a pretty neat vision of some glass and light artworks I’d like to present there – if selected. To view my application and put a vote for People’s Choice Award : https://art-rooms.org/application/varvio/
Newest new artwork: Teardrop 2017. This piece is made with glassblower Dylan Katz in Tampere Finland. We made tests on rolling up engraved glass shards on hot glass and this one came out pretty neat!
Otherwise I’ve had bunch of good news, my artwork Tusks is featured in New Glass Review 38 by Corning Museum of Glass and next year I will be one of selected artist-in-residence at Finnish Cultural Institute in New York. Big city buzz and cultural overdose for small town girl in summer 2018- looking forward to that!
