What an adventure! I just spend two weeks in the middle of nowhere (somewhere close to Gdov, Russia). I attended International Ecofest 2016 – workshop of ceramics, glass and metal with the theme of recycling. It was cool to see how people experimented with the materials. Here’s a piece I made together with St.Petersburg based glass artist Igor Frolov with very elementary glass furnace (now I know how to build one on my backyard):

For real, respects to this ultimate DIY guy! All in all there were super interesting artist participating the event and the results can be seen in the premises of Yelagin Palace, in St.Petersburg in exhibition that opens on 19th of August.

Even I went for experimenting and did a test on melting glass scrap on ceramics, here’s a close-up:

Here’s a summery scene of the lake near to my home. Lately I’ve been going back to a dear old theme in my art: shady waters, ghost and mermaids lurking under the surface.

Some of these “deep water” glass pieces will be on display at Talents -exhibition at Messe Frankfurt in the end of August alongside with my ceramic designs.

To be honest my summer has been far from lazy: I’ve been preparing a work (an engraved mirror!) for Rikki-exhibition at Third Space Gallery in Helsinki 28.8.-4.9.2016. Rikki is a collaborative project, which showcases art about mental disorders by several artists.  The main objective has been about removing stigma out of mental illnesses.

Here’s now smy new stuff from this spring, Gloomy Mermaid and Distressed Deer:

I have been casting these ghostly mugs for Talents – exhibition at Tendence fair 27-30.8.2016 in Messe Frankfurt. So see you then, at Hall no. 9.0.!

As I decided to show stoneware besides glass at the fair, I’ve been casting clay, waiting it to dry, and making finishing touches in a lovely studio here in Tampere. Feels almost therapeutic making ceramics for change, you can not be too hasty with clay…

Such fun! I’ve seen plenty of glass, demos, lectures and great people on my US excursion. Now I feel totally jet-lagged and glass-drunk. Glass Art Society’s Conference 2016 offered a lot and I was pretty overwhelmed by the scale of Corning Museum of Glass and the great facilities they have. I had never before considered making glass art as spectator sport, but I was proofed wrong!

And of course I had to tour around in New York City. I saw only a glimpse of all the museums and galleries the city had on offer. And for the first time classic pop-art (greetings to Warhol, Lichtenstein, Hopper and friends) made more sense than in schoolbook pictures. That imagery had grown from the buildings, items and advertisement around…

All in all I feel educated, good excursion to a world of art and glass in a different scale. Thank you GAS, Corning and New York!

Some of the Firebird themed artworks have flown to Maila Talvio -salong in Hartola, central Finland. The summer exhibition opens on 8th of June, and the assembly presents paintings, sculpture -and glass- from several artists.

Summer exhibition at Maila Talvio – salong 9.6.-21.8.2016

Koskipääntie 4, 19600 Hartola

Open Tue-Fri 11-18, Sat-Sun

Meanwhile there’s some pretty hot stuff to be seen at Nuutajärvi, as Peep show – other realities – summer exhibition is also running. Next week I’ll be having too much fun and excitement as I’m traveling to Corning N.Y. and Glass Art Society’s annual conference. Sure to be inspired!

Tulintu teoksia on lennähtänyt Hartolaan, sillä ensi viikolla 8.6. aukeaa Maila Talvio -salongin taiteen kesänäyttely.

Oh dear, Nuutajärvi summer exhibition is just around the corner! This year the exhibition is titled Peep show! The artworks are shown in a box – where you need to peak in – and be surprised… The exhibition opens 28.5.2016 at 3pm in old factory building (Vanhan Hytin halli) and it will run until 14.8.2016. So proud to be among the artists at the famous glass village!

Lauantaina 28.5. aukeaa Nuutajärven Lasikylän kesänäyttely! Jänskättää olla mukana ja päräyttäviä töitä tuloillaan. Peep show – Toinen todellisuus näyttely rullaa 14.8.2016 asti, joten kesällä tervetuloa Lasikylälle tutustumaan.

Otherwise I’ve been hanging around much in Riihimäki.  My new artworks have been made at Mafka&Alakoski glass studio, at the premises of old Riihimäki glass factory. If you are visiting the Finnish Glass Museum nearby (the new Accident exhibition is superb) be sure to visit also the glass studios in old factory milieu.

Muuten on tullut hengattua Riihimäellä. On niin hienoa, että uusia teoksia on puhallettu henkiin Mafka&Alakosken hytissä. Hyttikorttelin pajoihin kannattaa ehdottomasti mennä tutustumaan.

Here’s a close-up of one of the new pieces of this spring, more pics coming up!

In past months I’ve been sketching new artworks. Can not wait to test the ideas! There’s at least two summer exhibitions coming up here in Finland: art exhibition in Maila Talvio -salong and legendary Nuutajärvi summer exhibition. And for a while I visited Riihimäki and the Finnish Glass Museum. How sheering to find  familiar items in the permanent collection (piece from Comic Art in Glass and Wasteland there on the lower shelf)!

Yep, it’s not yet time for spring flowers here, but one can play with the thought…

The best way to start the new year is by getting fresh photos of last years artworks! These pieces, The Encounter, Hanging Tree and Let’s hide in the woods, play with the idea that a handcrafted glass piece projects surreal visions on the falls. Thanks to photographer Iiro Immonen, the scenes of light and darkness were captured in photos.
